The eyelids are one of the first facial structures to show signs of aging as collagen production in your skin begins to slow down, leading to drooping and sagging eyelids. Located in Manhattan, New York, Dr. Hooman Khorasani specializes in performing eyelid surgeries, or blepharoplasties, that deliver dramatic and long lasting results, giving your eyes a renewed vitality and younger look.

Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can reverse the effects of aging around your eyes by removing excess skin and fat, giving the eyes a more rested and youthful look. Eyelid surgeries typically treat the following problems:

  • Drooping or sagging skin in the upper eyelids that can impair vision
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids
  • Fatty deposits that lead to puffy upper and lower lids

Dr. Khorasani performs blepharoplasties in his office, under local anesthetic. This method avoids many of the risks that are associated with general anesthesia. The greatest benefits of eyelid surgery are that the results are long lasting, and the scar can be hidden in your upper eyelid crease so it’s essentially a scarless procedure.

Is the surgery painful?

Typically, you will only feel two needle pricks on each side of your face, and you are numb after these injections. If necessary, Dr. Khorasani may also give you oral medications for additional pain and anxiety control. The discomfort level with lower eyelid surgery may be slightly more pronounced. Dr. Khorasani often gives patients moderate sedation to address that concern.

What are the most common side effects?

The most common side effects are:

  • Bruising, which can last from 7 to 10 days
  • Swelling, which can last from 3 to 10 days
  • Dry eye, though this is not as common

What is the downtime associated with eyelid surgery?

Most patients have the procedure done on a Thursday or Friday and can return to work on Monday. However, if bruising occurs, the patient may also have to use special makeup to cover the bruises for 7 to 10 days. Check out our tips to speed up recovery after eyelid surgery!

How long do results last?

Although no cosmetic surgical procedure is considered permanent, eyelid surgery is one of the longest-lasting procedures available. There are also measures you can take to maintain your results, such as taking care with sun exposure and not irritating the area where you received surgery.
