Cosmetic Surgeon & Mohs Skin Cancer Surgeon located in Upper East Side, New York, NY

The eyelids are one of the first facial structures to show signs of aging. As we age, collagen production in your skin begins to slow down, causing your skin to lose resilience and elasticity. Loss of collagen can cause eyelids to “droop” or “sag,” which impacts your appearance and may limit your field of vision. Dr. Hooman Khorasani specializes in performing eyelid surgeries in New York City that deliver dramatic and long-lasting results. To find out whether eyelid surgery can give you renewed vibrance and a younger look, request a consultation online through Klara, our secure messaging platform, or contact Dr. Khorasani’s Manhattan office by phone

Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can reverse the effects of aging around your eyes by removing excess skin and fat, giving the eyes a more rested and youthful look. Eyelid procedures fall into two categories: cosmetic blepharoplasty and functional blepharoplasty. Cosmetic blepharoplasties are performed to reduce signs of aging and improve the appearance of the face. They are for aesthetic purposes only. Functional blepharoplasties are recommended by a doctor for medical reasons. They are commonly performed when excess skin on the upper eyelid is so heavy that it weighs down the eyelid and impairs vision.

Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both areas simultaneously to yield a dramatically, younger-looking appearance. After thoroughly examining your eyes and discussing your concerns, Dr. Khorasani will help you decide if a blepharoplasty surgery is right for you.

What Imperfections Can Be Improved With Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgeries typically treat the following problems:

  • Drooping or sagging skin of the upper eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Puffy lower eyelids
  • Fatty deposits that lead to puffy upper and lower lids
  • Limited area for makeup application
  • Impaired vision due to a reduced visual field
  • Irritation caused by friction between excess folds of skin
  • Discomfort from overused forehead muscles
  • Facial expression that appears permanently tired

How Do I Prepare for Eyelid Surgery?

Your New York blepharoplasty begins with an in-office consultation. During this one-on-one meeting, Dr. Khorasani will discuss your reasons for pursuing eyelid surgery and the goals you hope to achieve. He will also evaluate your skin and facial structure, review your medical history and answer any questions you have about the procedure. This appointment is your time to get to know Dr. Khorasani and familiarize yourself with the details of eyelid surgery, so you can make informed decisions about your treatment and proceed with confidence. Once Dr. Khorasani understands your goals, he will create your personalized surgical plan.

What Can You Expect During Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Khorasani performs blepharoplasties in the office, under local anesthesia. This method avoids many of the risks that are associated with general anesthesia. Typically, you will only feel two needle pricks on each side of your face, and you are numb after these injections. If necessary, Dr. Khorasani may also give you oral medications for additional pain and anxiety management. The discomfort level with lower eyelid surgery may be slightly more pronounced. Therefore, Dr. Khorasani often gives patients moderate oral sedation during a lower eyelid procedure.

In an upper blepharoplasty, incisions will be made in the natural creases of the upper eyelids. The length and contour of the incisions will be determined by the amount of extra skin that will be excised during the procedure. Dr. Khorasani will then remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten the underlying muscles and remove excess skin. This is the most common form of eyelid surgery.

In a lower blepharoplasty, incisions will be made along the lower lash lines or on the inside of the lower eyelids. There are no visible scars when the incision is located inside the eyelid, but this approach is not suitable in all cases. Dr. Khorasani will choose the appropriate technique based on what must be accomplished during surgery to give you the best possible outcome.

What Can You Expect After Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Khorasani and his team will carefully monitor your healing progress as you visit the office for follow-up appointments. You will be provided with detailed blepharoplasty aftercare instructions that may include the use of cool compresses and lubricating eye drops, sleeping on your back, wearing dark sunglasses and avoiding strenuous physical activities for a period of time. Following these instructions closely will minimize side effects and set you up for a safe and comfortable recovery. The most common side effects of eyelid surgery are:

  • Bruising, which can last from seven to fourteen days
  • Swelling, which can last from three to ten days
  • Dry eyes, (though this is not as common)

If bruising occurs, you may have to use special makeup to cover the discoloration for seven to ten days. Use of contact lenses can be resumed in one to two weeks. Check out our tips to speed up recovery after eyelid surgery.

How Long Do the Results of Blepharoplasty Typically Last?

The final results of your eyelid surgery will become apparent as the last of the postoperative swelling subsides. You will notice a more alert and well-rested expression as well as a more youthful facial aesthetic overall. If your blepharoplasty was performed for functional reasons, your upper eyelids will be lighter and your field of vision will be improved. The greatest benefits of eyelid surgery are that the results are long lasting, and the scar can be hidden in the natural creases of your eyelids.

Although no cosmetic surgery is considered permanent, eyelid surgery is one of the longest-lasting procedures available. Your eyes will continue to age naturally, and you may notice the skin relaxing over time, but you will always look more youthful than you would have without surgery. There are also measures you can take to maintain your results, such as preventing sun exposure and practicing healthy lifestyle habits.

Does Health Insurance Cover Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Khorasani does not take insurance for eyelid surgery.

What Other Procedures Might I Benefit From?

Blepharoplasty specifically targets the upper and/or lower eyelids. It does not get rid of dark circles under the eyes, remove crow’s feet or lift a sagging brow. Because its area of improvement is so focused, many patients choose to combine blepharoplasty with other procedures to address multiple concerns at once For instance, eyelid surgery is often done alongside laser resurfacing to address fine lines, and/or a fat transfer to address the hollowness of the tear trough. To restore the upper and lower face simultaneously, eyelid surgery can also be combined with a brow and/or facelift. Nonsurgical treatments such as neuromodulators (Botox) and/or dermal fillers can further enhance the results of your blepharoplasty.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Women and men who are generally healthy and do not suffer from pre-existing eye conditions are usually good candidates for blepharoplasty. Although most people considering eyelid surgery are older, younger adults can also benefit if they have aged prematurely or they have enough excess eyelid skin to impair their vision. Candidates should be nonsmokers or willing to stop smoking before their procedure and should have reasonable understanding of the benefits and risks that accompany cosmetic surgery.

An in-person consultation with Dr. Khorasani is required to confirm that eyelid surgery is the right choice to achieve your goals. If he determines that you are not a good candidate for blepharoplasty surgery at this time, Dr. Khorasani can work with you to create an anti-aging plan involving nonsurgical cosmetic treatments or other facial plastic surgeries that can address your concerns without compromising your health.
